Boris Johnson mourns the death of his mother, Charlotte Johnson and Wale, at the age of 79.
The family said she died “suddenly and peacefully” in a London hospital.
She was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease at the age of 40 and later became the President of the European Commission for Human Rights.
The prime minister once described her as the “highest authority” in his family.
Labor leader Sir Keir Starmer was among the first politicians to offer his condolences.
I am very sorry to learn of the loss of the Prime Minister. My condolences to him and his family.”
Conservative MP Angela Richardson said: “Sad news for the Prime Minister tonight as well as for the rest of the Johnson family. Thoughts are with them all.”
After marrying Stanley Johnson in 1963, Wal had four children: Boris, journalist Rachel, former Cabinet Secretary Joe and ecologist Liu, before divorcing in 1979.
Wilfrid was the son of the Prime Minister and her thirteenth grandson.
