The woman managed to escape after being wounded in the horrific assault.

Officers began a large-scale search for Martin after he escaped in a car while trying to arrest him the next day.

They told the public it could be “dangerous”, warning: “We urge anyone with information on his whereabouts not to approach him.

We think he is dangerous and could be armed.”

Crimestoppers offered a reward of £5,000 for information that led to the arrest.

Police confirmed, tonight, that the suspect – wanted for a series of alleged crimes – has been arrested in Ladywood, Birmingham.

Armed police surrounded a house in the inner city at about 6 p.m.

The suspect was taken to the back of an ambulance that was waiting outside the property.

The computers hid him from the paparazzi with a sheet when he climbed into the back of the car.

Then the cars with signs escorted the ambulance to the hospital.

A West Meads Police spokesperson said: “Police are searching for wanted Lee Martin and have arrested a 41-year-old man in Ladywood.

The arrest followed a districtwide manhunt involving a large number of officers and widespread outcry on media and social media.

“The 41-year-old will be taken into police custody for questioning,” he added.
