Scholes blames Man United from Lingard, fires target Solskjaer directly

Paul Scholes feels manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s tactics did not help Manchester United in their 2-1 defeat to Young Boys.

The Red Devils started their Champions League group stage campaign with the worst possible start on Tuesday. Despite his lead through Cristiano Ronaldo, Aaron Wan-Bissaka saw red.

The loss changed the man of the match after that, as Young Boys of Switzerland equalized in the 66th minute.

But things will go from bad to worse for Manchester United. Substitute Jesse Lingard, who played in place of Ronaldo, played a foul cross pass by Jordan Sepacho to score.

Lingard was the third substitution of five players by Solskjaer last night. Elsewhere, Jadon Sancho came for Diogo Dalot after red Lan-Bissaka.

Raphael Varane replaced Donny van de Beek, while Nemanja Matic and Anthony Martial replaced later. According to Scholes, Solskjaer should have brought Martial into the match earlier than the 89th minute.

“It’s not a complete disaster. Not perfect, you obviously want to go far and win.”

“Jesse will be disappointed, it all stems from the dismissal in the first half. United were very comfortable up to that point.

“I think United might have missed a trick, they couldn’t get half of them out that they were too deep.

“I think he should have been faster earlier in Martial or [Mason] Greenwood, they didn’t and they paid the ultimate price.”

However, this is not the first experience of this kind in their recent European memory. They lost in a similar way to Basaksehir in the Champions League last season.

On that occasion, it was made first by Demba Ba’s bizarre breakaway goal and then they lost 2-1.

Ferdinand warns Solskjaer about the familiarity of Man United

“It’s Basaksehir again. We were here last season and we’re sorry for the mistakes,” added Rio Ferdinand.

“This is a huge mistake at the end of the match from Jesse who did really well at the weekend. [It] It just goes to show the difficulty wherever you go in Europe.

“You have to be at your game. You have to be mentally disciplined.

“Yes, they started well and the decision in the game can change it. It was a bad touch, a bad tackle and then the match turned completely upside down.”

Manchester United will return to action on Sunday when they face West Ham in London.
