Rivers was involved in a quad smash on the M25 motorway as Insulate Britain activists closed several junctions of the busy motorway due to their climate change message.

Surrey police said 25 Insulate Britain and Extinction activists were arrested shortly after 10am on Wednesday.

The force said: “We are also dealing with a road traffic collision at Junction 9 of the M25 involving four vehicles.

Police, fire service and ambulances are currently on site.”

A police spokeswoman confirmed that all the protesters had been arrested and were no longer on the road.

Dozens of activists from Insulate Britain, which is calling on the government to take action on home confinement, halted traffic on two sections of Britain’s busiest motorways on Wednesday for the second time in three days.

They targeted Junction 23 for South Mimms in Hertfordshire and the main road from Junction 8 in Reigate to Junction 9 in Leatherhead, both in Surrey, at about 8am.

Protesters sat on the road, while stranded motorists whistled their horns.

Videos posted on social media show angry drivers protesting against the activists.

During the recent Insulate Britain blockade, Edmund King, president of the AA Motor Insurance Group, said that a thermal insulation engineer was prevented from going to work after he got stuck in a queue.

“While most people are aware of the need to take action on climate change, these highway blockade tactics are only counterproductive because they alienate the working public caught in this mess and thus pump more emissions,” he said on Wednesday.

“It is somewhat ironic that the insulation engineers trying to isolate Britain were caught up in the congestion caused by Insulate Britain.

“Essential deliveries, emergency services, missing persons in hospitals and working hours have all been affected by this blockade.

“We hope the police will take immediate action to open the arteries in Britain.”

Insulet Britain said 89 of its members took part in the operation on Wednesday.

“We demand credible action now,” she said in a statement.

“The right jobs for hundreds of thousands of people to start the first real step – to isolate all the homes of this country – pound for pound gives us the biggest drop in carbon emissions.

“It’s a no-brainer, and yet this government is refusing to take the job. This is criminal negligence.”

A demonstration by the same group on Monday saw the closure of five junctions of the M25, trapping tens of thousands of drivers in large queues of traffic and arresting dozens.
