In this wireless headphone switch guide, we’ll look at how to connect a Bluetooth headphone to the adapter, as well as some common problems that come up and questions you might have.

Note: We’ve used AirPods as an example throughout this article (because these are the earbuds we have), but the vast majority of the information below will apply to any wireless earbuds, headphones, or other audio devices you might own.

Let’s start with the basics…

How to connect Apple AirPods to the Switch

First, go to System Settings on the main screen (the second circular icon from the right along the bottom) and scroll down to Bluetooth Audio in the left column.

Note – You will need to make sure your adapter is updated with the latest firmware – Bluetooth audio update came with version 13.0.0 – To check the system version, scroll down to the bottom of the left ‘System settings’ column for ‘System’. Right below System Update, it should say “Current system version: XX.XX”.

Click “Add Device” and the system will start searching for discoverable Bluetooth audio devices. As the router instructs you, you will have to make sure that your Bluetooth device (headphones, speaker, etc.) is discoverable and unlocked on another device.

For Apple AirPods, for example, this means you’ll have to put your AirPods in their case, open the lid and hold down the button on the case until they begin to flash with a white light (other types of Bluetooth headphones may have a different way to enter mode discoverable – check the instructions for the specific headphones or earbuds).

Once selected by the controller, select the device to pair the controller with your headphones. job done!

How do I adjust the volume of my headset on the Switch?

Press and hold the Home button (on the right side of the Joy-Con) and a popup menu will appear that enables you to adjust the volume of the connected headphones (as well as screen brightness).

Can I use wireless headphones with my Switch in Docked mode?

Yes really.

We switched the docked handheld model back to manual mode without interruption or interruption of BT audio.

Anyone with experience with Bluetooth audio devices has probably encountered connection issues at some point. Perhaps it is good to remember that Bluetooth was not originally intended to transmit data-intensive audio, and problems can arise for various reasons.

In this section, we present common problems that arise with solutions and explanations. We will update this guide with more questions and solutions.

My AirPods do not connect to Switch Images: Nintendo Life

If your headphones don’t show up as discoverable on your Switch, or if they aren’t plugged in even though they were previously paired with your Switch, their connection to another device may be preventing them from pairing with your console.

For example, if your AirPods are connected to your iPhone, they will not be able to connect to your Switch. In this case, you’ll want to disable Bluetooth on your phone (on your iPhone, you can tap up from the bottom and tap on the Bluetooth icon to quickly disable BT without going into settings).

I put my switch to sleep and now my AirPods are not reconnecting

If you are playing and then press the standby button to enter sleep mode, the headphones will be disconnected from the Switch.

Assuming you haven’t fixed them with a different device, your Bluetooth headphones should automatically reconnect to switch – depending on which AirPods you’re using, you may have to remove them from your ears for a while to connect to (re)record (we found this necessary with AirPod Pros).

It is very quiet! How do I turn up the headphone volume on the Switch?

Some people experience low volume with AirPods and other Bluetooth earbuds on the Switch.

While the max volume seems to always be lower than on other audio devices (we changed wired Apple earbuds for testing and found the max volume significantly higher—uncomfortably, but the mileage will obviously vary here), it may be You have `max` minimum headphone volume enabled.

The “Maximum headphone volume” setting is found in the System settings instead of the Bluetooth Audio section (at the bottom of the column in the main system settings menu) and is designed to prevent accidental hearing damage.

If you have this enabled, simply tap the option to disable it (if you have parental controls you’ll need to enter your PIN to unlock it – check the accompanying Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app to find your PIN if you’ve forgotten He. She.

With Maximum Headphone Volume disabled, we found the sound to be comfortable at full volume with the AirPods, and clearly easy to hear with the AirPod Pros noise canceling enabled. However, the maximum volume while using the Apple AirPods appears to be noticeably quieter than other brands.

We will update with more information after more testing.

I can’t connect controllers while using a Bluetooth headset

This is one of the limits that defines Nintendo – a maximum of two consoles can be connected to one console while using Bluetooth audio.

For two players with one Joy-Con, you’ll be fine. However, if you are playing in tabletop mode and one person wants to use, say, a Pro controller, a small message will appear to remind you of the following:

Up to two wireless controllers can be used while playing Bluetooth audio.

It should be noted that playing local multiplayer with multiple adapters will also disable Bluetooth audio.

Can I use my bluetooth microphone for voice chat?

No, unfortunately this is another limitation. Nintendo expressly states that:

Bluetooth microphones cannot be used.

Why is the sound delayed from the work that appears on the screen?

Bluetooth may have become an industry standard for quickly transferring data between devices, but it’s not the best when it comes to high-quality audio and you might notice some audio lag.

The delay time will vary depending on your device. For example, while using AirPods, we’ve found that the sound of Sonic’s jump (in Sonic 2) is not heard until the character is near the peak of the jump. Audio lag is noticeable and may have a negative effect if game audio is critical to game operation.

Playing something like Cadence of Hyrule, for example, which relies on precise button presses for rhythm, would be challenging. However, in other games you may not even notice the sound delay. It all depends on what you are playing and how sensitive you are.

We hope you found this guide useful. We’ll update it over time, so if you have any questions or suggestions, drop them in the comments below and we’ll do our best to address them.
