Earlier on Wednesday, the World Health Organization’s special envoy on the coronavirus told Sky News that the government must be prepared to move quickly from “Plan A to Plan B” in order to limit infections should they rise quickly.
Professor David Nabarro said: “Speed is of the essence. We’ve been through this before and know, as a result of past experience, that acting fast and acting very hard is the way you can beat this virus, then life can go on.”

The government’s plan A consists of a booster cake campaign that will start next week, and guidelines that people meet outdoors or open windows if they are indoors.
People are also advised to wear a face mask in crowded and enclosed spaces, wash their hands frequently and use the NHS COVID-19 app.
Plan B could include vaccination passports, mandatory masks, and work-from-home directives.
Later this week, the UK travel list will be updated so that Jamaica is among the countries at risk of moving to the red list.
