France says it killed ISIS leader in the Greater Sahara, Adnan Abu Walid al-Sahrawi | Islamic country

Emmanuel Macron said that French military forces had killed the leader of the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara, Adnan Abu Walid al-Sahrawi.

“It is another great success in our fight against terrorist groups in the Sahel region,” the French president said on Wednesday evening, without revealing the location of the operation.

Macron’s office said al-Sahrawi was the historical leader of Islamic State in the West African Sahel region and that his group targeted US soldiers in a deadly attack in Niger in 2017.

She added that in August 2020, Sahrawi personally ordered the killing of six French charity workers and their Nigerian driver.

Macron said in July that France would soon begin to reconfigure its forces in the Sahel region, where it had been on the front lines of the fight against Islamist militants, and would eventually cut its military presence in half.

With no clear end in sight for France’s operations and political turmoil especially in Mali, Paris was frustrated.

“The nation thinks this evening of all its heroes who died for France in the Sahel in Operation Serval and Barkhane, of the families of the victims, and of all its wounded,” Macron said in a tweet on Twitter. “Their sacrifice is not in vain. Together with our African, European and American partners, we will continue this fight.”
