X Factor star Freddie Combs tragically passed away at the age of 49 due to kidney failure.

TMZ reports that the singer, who appeared on the US version of popular TV talent show Simon Cowell, was said to have been surrounded by family and friends when he died in a Florida hospital.

It comes after his wife Kai said he’s been losing weight over the past 11 years, losing an incredible 37 stones after going from 64 stone to 27.

Kai praised Freddie, telling the newspaper, “I am so grateful to have been his wife of 25 years and to be his best friend.”

He debuted on The X Factor during the second series of the US version, and stunned Simon and L.A. Reid with his performance of ‘Wind Beneath My Wings’.

Freddy, from North Carolina, was offered a chance on the show as long as he was healthy and able to leave his wheelchair, which he pledged.

Simon said to him, “I don’t think you deserve to be stuck in this chair. I’ll support you if you come back by yourself.”

The singer had opened up before his performance in 2012, saying, “I was bedridden and never went out of the house.

“I’ve never heard my music. My biggest dream has been to give hope to people my size. I hope the judges will look beyond my outward appearance and give a fat boy a chance.”

Britney Spears also appeared as a judge during the audition and described his voice as “shockingly amazing”.
