Rennes 2-2 Tottenham Hotspur: Hogberg saves a point for Tottenham to open the group stage in the Conference

Pierre-Emile Hojberg came to the rescue of Tottenham Hotspur, scoring the second-half equalizer to ensure the team secured a point at Rennes in the first game of the Europa League group stage. It was a disappointing 90-minute turnaround for the visitors, who showed little attacking vision and made sloppy defensive mistakes to concede.

first half

3′ – Tanguy Ndombele and Stephen Bergwijn combined for Spurs’ first real shot, but Bergwijn’s shot did not hit the target.

11′ – Tottenham goal! Ndombele keeps the ball in play from the right side of the field, which Oliver Skipp quickly picks up and sends Harry Kane’s way. Kane quickly sends the ball to Lucas Moura, who runs towards goal, with his shot hitting Rennes Loic’s Padre on the way to his goal.

18′ – Ben Davies crossed Lucas in front of goal with a header but the ball was out of play.

20′ – Benjamin Boregaud sends a ball towards Pierluigi Giulini, who saves it. Adrien Truffert tries to score on rebounds, but sends the ball over the goal.

23′ – Goal nets! Near the penalty area, Sehrou Guirassy sends the ball behind him to Flavien Tait on the edge of the penalty area. Tate wasted no time and hit the equaliser.

30′ – Højbjerg enters in place of Bergwijn, who fell after being kicked by Bourigeaud while trying to get the ball.

42′ – Both teams trade possession bouts, but mixed luck creating meaningful scoring opportunities. It was Spurs’ turn to dominate and the visitors scored their second shot with Kane’s shot that was blocked by goalkeeper Roman Salen. Brian Gill was unsuccessful in his attempt to score on a rebound.

45′ + 1 – Kamaluddin Sulimana hits the end of a cross, and looks great with a header that eventually falls just wide.

the other half

51′ – Ndombele makes his way into the penalty area and attempts a shot, but Saline pounces on the ball to stop play.

54′ – Dane Scarlett joins Lucas, who also picked up an injury early in the second half. Emerson Royal also comes with Kane at the same time.

62′ – Spurs had a number of free kicks in the second half, all close to goal and all easily handled by the Rennes defence. It was no different, with Saleen hitting Bryan’s kick from the right side of the field.

71′ – Royal sends the ball to Hogberg who shoots quickly from close range. Saleen grabbed the ball, and although it bounced off his hands for a moment, he held onto it well.

72′ – goal nets! Solimana hits a shot from a distance, Golini puts it in the goalkeeper’s position and then perfectly puts Gaitani Laborde on his left. Laborde scores easily from close range to give the hosts the lead.

76′ – Tottenham goal! Matt Doherty sends a cross into the penalty area from the right side of the field. The ball comes first from Tate before landing at the feet of Hogberg, who scored the equalizer just minutes after Rennes took the lead.

90′ – Both teams go back and forth to try and find the match-winning goal, but very few chances come from their efforts.

Notes on the match Spurs managed to improve from the first half as they only had three shots, but not to the point where it became an above-average offensive performance. By the middle of the first half, I felt Nuno Espírito Santo’s team ran out of ideas. The offensive issues against Rennes, combined with performances so far this season, seem to confirm that Espirito Santo will stick to the style of defense with which he made his name at Wolverhampton Wanderers. Nobody had a really special match, but the only player worth highlighting is Ndombele. He’s had plenty of bright spots during his debut this season, decisively involved in Spurs’ first goal. It’s never a great match when you score as many goals as you get injured. Heading into the weekend’s game against Chelsea with an already depleted squad wasn’t ideal, but Bergwijn and Lucas could miss out now due to the injuries they’ve picked up.
