Andrew Neale said he resigned as head of GB News after disagreements over the direction the channel was heading.
The journalist and broadcaster appeared on BBC’s Question Time Thursday night, days after announcing his departure from the fledgling channel, in a tweet saying it was time to reduce my commitments on a number of fronts.
GB News was launched in June with Neil Neil saying it would not “fearly follow the current news agenda”, would cover “stories that matter to you and those that have been neglected” and offer “a wide range of voices that reflect views and values from our UK”.
He told Neal at the time of the question that the launch of the channel could not be described as an “amazing success” and that he felt “a minority of one” regarding its future.
“More and more disagreements arose between me, the other senior managers and the GB News board,” he said.
“Instead of narrowing those differences, broadening them and feeling it’s better that if that’s the path they want to go down, it’s up to them, it’s their money.
“The road is what I think you can see on GB News at the moment, people have to make their own decisions about what they want to watch.”
Nigel Farage has since become the main evening presenter and the channel is looking to hire more of his former stablemates in the Brexit Party in what appears to be a move right on the political spectrum.
A number of big names joined the channel upon its launch including ITV News journalist Alistair Stewart, BBC journalist Simon McCoy, and former Labor MP Gloria De Piero.
Goto Harry has resigned from the channel after a knee spat during a discussion about racism directed against football players in England, while other members of the staff have left.
Neil said: “I thought it wasn’t right for me, I wanted a different route – it doesn’t mean I’m right or they’re wrong, but it definitely was a difference.
“The differences were so great that the direction they were going wasn’t the direction I had set, and it wasn’t the direction I had envisioned for the channel.
“But I was in the minority of one, so it comes down to what he does and it’s up to them. Good luck to them if that’s what they want to do.”
Following Neil’s announcement on Monday, a statement from GB News said: “Andrew is without a doubt one of the best journalists and interviewees in this country.
“GB News thanks him for 12 months of leadership, wisdom and advice and we wish him well.”
The TV space populated by JB News will soon find another passenger after Rupert Murdoch announced that Piers Morgan – often touted as the potential savior of JB News – will face a new channel called TalkTV.
