7 min: Ella Tone, her first start for England, hits a shot from outside the area. It is easily memorized by Dervishi. Hemp immediately finds plenty of space on the left and swings into a cross. Dervishi deals with it. You will have a busy night.

5 minutes: Hemp now finds acres of space on the left for England. The players are elated early on as North Macedonia’s defense already appears to have stretched dangerously well.

2 minutes: Ruchi, North Macedonia’s only striker, does a good job as he picks up the ball and hits a shot from distance. Easy for Earps to memorize. England slipped to the other end, with Andonova reclaiming the win, but then twice interfering on the edge of her own penalty area. Visitors managed to evacuate again, however, and clear the ground.

The start of the first half!
here we are. Players from both sides rode on our way. Williamson immediately calls Daly the right wing a superb ball. A transverse Hemp meets Daly with a header but is deflected outward for an angle. The angle does not reach anything.

The bands came out and the songs started. There are plenty of fans already in their spots at St Mary’s to watch North Macedonia raise their anthem. Kick-off is two minutes away.

On ITV, Leah Williamson was asked what it means to be captain tonight: “Obviously, unfortunate circumstances, but I hope Steve’s recovery is going well…So proud of always representing my country but today it’s more special.”
On Weigmann’s arrival: “She’s obviously been very successful with the Dutch national team, so we are all ears… The level of training was really high. Everything went up, which is probably what we needed and I’m excited to show everyone what we’ve been working on.
“It’s a great occasion, Friday night, under the lights. It’s going to be a good day – I can feel it.”

Wigmann was asked about the severity of Houghton’s injury: “We don’t know yet… She is now back at the club and will do more research.”
On Fran Kirby recovering from injury: “You’ll be back Tuesday… We didn’t want to take any risks… We thought that was too early.”
And on what she liked about the captain, Leah Williamson: “In her game, on the field, she’s really calm… Also off the field she’s calm but she knows what she wants.”

More words from Wiegman in a pre-recorded interview with ITV: “I hope we can get as high as we can, and that’s what we’re going to work for, really hard.
“It’s really nice to be here…to meet the players, to be with them on the pitch, it’s very nice. The challenge drew me to the job – the capabilities and the history…excited and challenged me.
“I’m a people manager. I’m a real team player… We don’t have to do real new things because the players bring a lot of experience and quality but I will carry my vision on how we want to play.”

Interesting thoughts here from Wiegman (from Suzanne Wrack’s article below) about lineups in the modern game: “Squads, these days, football has become very dynamic,” she said. “You talk more about principle. Sometimes, if you take a picture, it looks like 4-4-2. At another moment you take a picture it looks like 3-5-2 or 3-4-3. At another moment the result is 4-3-3. It just depends on what’s going on in the game. You’re not just going to stay put all the time.”

Preamble
Sarina Weigman’s tenure as England women’s manager begins tonight and she really has to think twice: Captain Steve Hutton has been left out with an ankle injury he picked up in training yesterday and will therefore miss tonight’s game against North Macedonia. As well as Tuesday’s meeting away from home against Luxembourg.
Arsenal’s Leah Williamson, Houghton’s defensive partner, will now step in to lead England, and Wegman said: “This is an exciting opportunity for Leah to wear the captain’s armband at a senior level for the first time, and I look forward to seeing her in action.”
Fans will also be heading to St Mary’s as England look to start their qualifying campaign for the 2023 Women’s World Cup – to be held in Australia and New Zealand – on a positive note. With or without Houghton, it’s a match they expect to win, and the match starts at 7 p.m. Read pre-match, team news and more at once.
