China is close to concluding that its attempts to control Taiwan will succeed only “through military efforts”. Former MI6 Deputy Director Nigel Inkster told LBC this morning that the probability of a military confrontation between China and the United States is “up to eight on a scale of one to ten.” On Friday, the Taiwan Air Force rushed to warn 10 Chinese planes that entered the air defense zone.
The day before, Taiwan announced an unprecedented $9 billion increase in military spending to counter the threat from China.
There is also concern that the newly signed Aukus Defense Agreement between the United Kingdom, the United States and Australia could drag Britain into a war with China over Taiwan.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman, Zhao Lijian, described the AUC agreement as an example of an “outdated, zero-sum Cold War mentality”.
LBC host Matt Fry asked Mr. Inkster, “On a scale of one to ten, how likely is there a military confrontation between America and China over this issue?”

Mr Inkster replied: “We’re up to eight now.
“The best case scenario is for both China and the United States to realize that they are on equal footing militarily and neither has a huge advantage.
“This recognition can ensure that peace continues if peace is torn. This is our best hope.”
Mr. Fry continued, “Xi Jinping is in a hurry. He wants to put Taiwan under his belt before he leaves office, and that will be for a while. But the momentum is picking up, right?”
China is adopting an increasingly aggressive attitude toward Taipei, which has long received military support from the United States.
Taiwan recklessly faced repeated incursions by the Chinese Air Force.
Speaking on Friday, Taiwan Premier Su Tsing-chang said the government should take the threat from China seriously.
He said, “The Chinese Communists are constantly plotting against us.”
