Magnitude 4.3 earthquake centered near Carson shakes Southern California – Redlands Daily Facts

An earthquake measuring 4.3 on the Richter scale with an epicenter near Carson jolted much of Los Angeles County and could be felt throughout the Southern California region on Friday evening.

Residents of coastal communities such as Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, and Long Beach, along with people living in southern Los Angeles, reported feeling the strongest impact of the earthquake, according to a US Geological Survey map.

The USGS said the quake, which struck at 7:58 p.m. at a depth of about nine miles, was also felt by people in surrounding counties in Orange and Riverside and as far north as Oxnard and further south in Carlsbad.

Los Angeles County fire and law enforcement officials did not report any injuries or damage to buildings from the earthquake.

Shortly after the quake, fire crews responded to the calls of flames at a refinery in Carson, but refinery operators managed the matter and said the event was a controlled and natural ignition process, dispatcher supervisor Jeremy Stafford said at the Los Angeles County fire.

Los Angeles City Council member Joe Boscaino told KCBS-TV that the refinery is designed to burn off excess fuel in the event of an earthquake of this magnitude.
