It’s Friday, it’s autumn, there’s a breeze in the air (hopefully), and there’s a new, I would argue ridiculous, Galaxy S22 Ultra expected to show you. The renders come from OnLeaks and Digit, and it features a new Samsung flagship with what looks like a Galaxy Note 20-inspired body and vice versa…well you have to see it for yourself.
Ever since it decided to skip the Galaxy Note in 2021 — apparently to T-Mobile’s dismay — Samsung has been streaming Note features across its popular phones. The Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra and Galaxy Z Fold 3 both offer stylus support. If these new offers are to be believed, the Galaxy S22 Ultra will go even further. According to OnLeaks and Digit, the new phone will come with a punch-hole selfie camera and a candy bar from last year’s Note, along with stylus support and what looks like an actual pen slot.
Rendering the back of the device is where things get interesting, weird, or nasty, depending on your taste. The Galaxy S22 Ultra appears to turn the camera “plateau” of the S21 Ultra into an unmistakable P-shape. Is P for…photos? With pictures? Perhaps the endoscope? Certainly there seems to be plenty of room. For reference, the previous Ultra included a 108MP wide-angle main sensor, two 10MP zoom sensors, and a 12MP ultrawide sensor on the back of the device. Who knows what the new S22 Ultra will suit?
The P-shaped cameras are hard to miss, and a little easier to miss the stylus slot at the bottom of the radiator.
There is reason to believe that this may be Samsung’s design, plus it fits in with the general trend of the camera becoming large and growing…increasingly visible on devices like the iPhone 13 Pro and the yet to be released Pixel 6. A fairly good track record of leaked phones, and it pretty much matches the look of both the Pixel 5 and Pixel 6. This kind of improvement in the camera cover doesn’t look out of the picture, in many ways, it downplays the S21 Ultra’s cameras: the angle has been removed. This doesn’t mean it doesn’t look weird.
I can imagine seeing the letter “P” on the Galaxy S21 Ultra if you really look at it. Photo by Vjeran Pavic / The Verge
