Timo Werner has been in serious discussions regarding transfers with Liverpool and Manchester United in 2019, according to a detailed report.
The striker at that time played for RB Leipzig but had a great interest in his services from all over Europe. In the end, he picked Chelsea in 2020 and took home the Champions League trophy.
However, he did not enjoy the greatest time under Frank Lampard and Thomas Tuchel.
He has struggled for the level since his move, while Romelu Lukaku’s rise to the top has shaken up the selection standings.
According to a new, lengthy report from Der Spiegel, Werner’s career could have looked a lot different.
The German publication, which first alleged violations of Financial Fair Play by Manchester City in November 2018, has now provided details of a lawsuit between his agent, Karl-Heinz Forster, and his former partner, Murat Lukorlu.
The striker recently spoke about his reasons for choosing Chelsea, amid Liverpool’s interest in the summers of 2019 and 2020. According to Der Spiegel, though, Werner held a meeting with Reds boss Jurgen Klopp at the start of 2019.
Moreover, Liverpool made a concrete offer. They proposed to the player a five-year contract worth €12m (£10m) and up to €25m (£21m) in bonuses.
Elsewhere, Der Spiegel leaked Whatsapp messages from Lokurlu and Werner.
The German told his advisor that Chelsea was not his first choice. Instead, he referred to Manchester United as his “favourite” and described the Blues as “great alternatives”.
Besides, the report claims that from United, Chelsea and Liverpool, the former made the first real bid.
The Red Devils have offered a contract worth just under €15m (£13m) to Werner’s agent via Whatsapp. The agent replied, “We’ll see.”
Bayern was on Werner’s transfer round
According to Lucorlow’s lawyer, Werner was in talks with Liverpool and Bayern Munich in February 2019.
A separate report by Goal, published in parallel with Der Spiegel’s claims, revealed how the player turned his back on Bayern.
He signed a pre-contract agreement with the German giants. However, he backed down after learning that prominent Bayern figures did not want him at the club.
Werner scored 13 goals and provided 16 assists in his time with Chelsea.
But Lukaku has already scored four goals for the Blues in six matches.
Can Chelsea keep Antonio Rudiger out of the clutches of Bayern Munich?
