Jamie Carragher told Espirito Santo how he can become a real Tottenham coach

Jamie Carragher believes a comparison can be made between former Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson and Tottenham’s Nuno Espirito Santo.

The Lilywhites lost 3-1 at the Emirates Stadium and delivered a performance that was miles away from display against Manchester City in their 1-0 win on the opening day of the Premier League season.

The North London side won their first three games under Espirito Santo, but have since suffered a shock defeat and lost their last three league games, conceding a total of nine goals in those losses.

Fans are calling for major changes to be made ahead of their next Premier League match against Aston Villa at Tottenham Hotspur, to save the club from further embarrassment.

The Portuguese coach led Wolverhampton to seventh place in the Premier League but left in May after a dip in his final season in the Midlands. Meanwhile, Hodgson spent just six months at Anfield having secured the job after an impressive stint with Fulham.

Speaking ahead of Crystal Palace’s match against Brighton on Monday Night Football, Carragher compared the current Tottenham boss to the former Liverpool manager.

“Roy Hodgson is a really good manager but he wasn’t the right manager for Liverpool and there is no doubt that Spurs fans have thought early on: ‘Is Nuno the Tottenham manager?'” “It is not clear then.”

“He needs to fetch his deals but my advice to Nuno is to be yourself whether you’re going five behind or being defensive, do what you’re doing well because they have nothing to go forward, which is the worst in the league for xG (expected goals) and she created chances, but she So open, it totally tore up every match.”

Spurs lost 3-0 to Chelsea and Crystal Palace and underperformed in both, apart from some good play in the first 45 minutes against the Blues.

A number of stats featured on Sky Sports’ Monday night football coverage – which includes attacking play – see Spurs really lack creativity, including having the fewest shots so far this season.

Hodgson was in charge at Liverpool for just over six months, in which time he led Liverpool to 13 victories, eight draws and ten defeats.

Espirito Santo has only been in charge of Tottenham for ten games but a number of fans have not been impressed by what they are watching so far.

Could a shift in formation help unlock potential within his team?

In an interview with Sky Sports in November 2020, the Portuguese coach revealed why he chose his 3-4-3 squad for Wolverhampton.

“When you attack you have to have breadth and when you defend you have to be compact so that’s what the team looks like when we defend,” he said.

“We have to be compact, close to each other, aware that the outside [space] There but the moment you go we are there to participate in our defensive operation. But the main idea is to be compact when we’re defending and to have the maximum width when we’re attacking.”

Being compact while defending is not something Spurs have shown, especially against Arsenal when their opponents were given plenty of space and time on the ball, which resulted in three goals.

The Tottenham Hotspur North London derby coach started with the 4-3-3 formation he chose since his move to North London but changed it slightly in the second half.

Dele Alli was replaced by Oliver Skipp and Spurs entered in a 4-2-3-1 formation, which may have contributed to the slight improvement, albeit Mikel Arteta’s side have moved away from the gas.

Changing the formation might be a way to start trying to improve the way players work together on the field and ultimately improve performance.

Pierre-Emile Hogberg and Skipp have played together in a number of games this season in midfield and they seem to have a good partnership.

Hogberg did not produce his best performances at the Emirates Stadium but Squibb came in in the second half and seemed to help Spurs get something out of the match and showed the desire most other players lack.

Tanguy Ndombele and Alli also started in the middle of the field but both had poor performances, especially when defending, leaving big gaps as Arsenal were moving forward.

Therefore, if Espirito Santo opts for a 4-2-3-1 formation, he will allow Hogberg and Skipp to do the defensive work that has shown they can, as well as going forward where appropriate.

This will allow the likes of Alli and Ndombele – as well as their more offensive midfielders – to move forward just behind Harry Kane.

It’s a change to try to see if it works, but with the look the Lilywhites are currently in, any steps toward improvements will be welcomed by fans.

So while, says Carragher, it remains to be seen if Espirito Santo is “Tottenham’s coach”, some tweaks on the training ground could help him on the right path to getting there.
