A shadow cabinet minister said Keir Starmer would show it was “a new day, a new dawn” for Labor in a caucus address to draw a line under Jeremy Corbyn.

David Lammy, the shadow justice minister, said the Labor leader would focus on “fixing some of the issues that the British people have asked us to fix”, rejecting the idea that the party was too focused on “identity issues”.

Prior to Starmer’s speech, Lamy said Corbyn was “the past”, and rejected the idea of ​​mass nationalizing the industry, saying Labor was not attending a “PhD in Marxist philosophy”.

He said the focus was on fiscal responsibility when it came to issues such as raising the minimum wage to £15 an hour or looking at bringing certain sectors into public ownership, always asking if the UK could afford that.

Asked about his past praise of Corbyn, Lammy told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “We lost. You have to recalibrate when you lose. Lamy was asked about transgender rights after she said that there are “dinosaurs” on the right and left who want to “hoard rights” rather than recognizing them for transgender people. His remarks were seen by some as a criticism of Labor MP Rosie Duffield, who sparked a controversy after saying “only women have cervixes” and then saying she felt insecure about attending this year’s party convention.

However, Lamy denied that he was talking about Duffield and criticized the BBC for asking about the case. “You, the BBC, choose to talk about this topic – which most Brits don’t talk about in the fuel crisis – and spend minutes on this because it makes Labor talk about identity issues and not about substantive politics that Kerr would be talking about,” he said.

In his much-anticipated address later on Wednesday, Starmer will deny Corbyn’s legacy without naming him, accusing the government of being “lost in the woods”.

He will put tackling Britain’s post-Covid mental health crisis at the center of his rhetoric to voters, with a promise that the Labor government will provide mental health treatment to everyone who needs it within a month, and set up rapid mental health centers aimed at children and young adults.

The pledges will be outlined in Starmer’s first personal speech at the conference in Brighton, which he hopes will show Labor is “back to work” and has a program to address “the chronic problems that Covid has exposed”.

Labor believes the escalating fuel crisis is raising voters’ concerns about the efficiency of Boris Johnson, with the government attacking a number of fronts and even the Tory-leaning press accusing Downing Street of losing its grip. “The gloss has faded,” a party spokesperson said.

Lamy said the prime minister showed he was a “clown” who was “missing in action” as people queued at the pumps. He blamed the fuel crisis on the government for its failure to deliver a Brexit deal, which he said Labor would have to consider how to fix it.

He told ITV’s Good Morning Britain: “Brexit is responsible for some of the problems we’re seeing. With regard to this fuel crisis, there are no queues for fuel in France, Spain and Germany, but there are queues for fuel in our country. That was the result of to leave the European Union with Boris Johnson’s deal.”

After Johnson on Tuesday pleaded with the public not to fill their cars with petrol unless necessary, Starmer will seek to compare the government’s chaotic approach to the scale of the challenges facing the country.

He is expected to say: “I see the government lost in the woods with two looming roads. One road leads us to where we came from. None of the lessons of Covid have been heeded. The divisions and flaws exposed by the epidemic have brutally exacerbated.

“But there is another path in which we address the chronic problems that Covid has exposed with the kindness and teamwork that we have been able to overcome.”

He will call mental health “one of the pressing needs of our time”, and promises that the Labor government will address it on a number of fronts.

Starmer will be joined in the Brighton conference room by his wife, after he spent part of the family’s summer vacation drafting the first draft of his speech.

Many colleagues consider it a defining moment for his leadership, amid concerns about whether the party has managed to get a hearing from voters and whether the public knows what Starmer stands for.
