France’s 35-year search for a serial killer may have finally come to an end after a former police officer left a posthumous confession saying he was the “controversial killer”.
French media reported that the body of a 59-year-old man identified only as Francois V was found in the southern town of Grau-du-Roi near Montpellier on Wednesday.
A suicide note indicates that “Lou Greeley,” which translates as patterned killer, may have been accused of four murders and six rapes since 1986.
The crimes included the murder of 11-year-old Cecile Bloch in Paris.
Her mother reported her missing when she failed to return home for lunch on May 5, 1986. After an inspection, her partially naked body was found under an old rug in a basement, and evidence indicates that she was raped.
Among the suspected murder victims are Jill Politi, 38, a 20-year-old German woman, Irmgard Muller and Karen Leroy, 19.
The man reportedly said in his letter that he was in a bad psychological state at the time of the crimes but that he had “gathered himself since then”.
It is said that he was a gendarme and had two children after marriage.
Le Point and Parisian newspapers said he committed suicide after becoming a suspect in the crimes and ordered to appear before a local judge.
The authorities had ordered him to appear before a judge but he did not comply, according to Le Parisien newspaper.
Reports said that a DNA test is being conducted on the body.
