A 3.4-magnitude earthquake woke up the San Francisco Bay area near Morgan Hill Sunday morning, the US Geological Survey reports.

The 1.2-mile-deep quake struck 7 miles northwest of Morgan Hill at 5 a.m. Pacific time, according to the US Geological Survey. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

Fifty people from as far away as Sacramento and Monterey reported feeling the quake, according to the US Geological Survey.

The quake followed a 3.4-magnitude earthquake at 12:22 p.m. PST Saturday north of San Leandro in the Bay Area, the US Geological Survey said.

Another earthquake measuring 3.4 on the Richter scale hit Santa Rosa, north of the Bay Area, at 5:45 a.m. Thursday, McClatchy News reported.

The scale measures the energy released by the earthquake source, says the USGS. It replaces the old Richter scale.

Earthquakes of between 2.5 and 5.4 are often felt, but they rarely cause significant damage, according to Michigan Tech.
