good morning. Rishi Sunak, the chancellor, is the keynote speaker at this morning’s Conservative Party conference, and he did the morning interview before the speech, which he appeared to be rehearsing last night.

In one of his early interviews, Sunak rebuked Conservative Party member Chris Lauder, who said at a fringe meeting yesterday that he hoped the current shortage of heavy-duty truck drivers could unravel supermarket supply chains. Snack was able to stress that abandoning the supply chains that most of us rely on to shop is not a conservative party policy. Asked about Lauder’s comment, Sunak said:

I don’t think anyone would say that there is a positive side to people with supply chain challenges and not being able to get what they want when they want it. Nobody wants to see that.

What we have said more broadly is that one of our desires over time is to transform ourselves into an economy with higher salaries, higher skills, and a more productive economy.

Sunak was also asked about the revelations of the leaked Pandora papers, which were detailed by The Guardian. He said His Majesty Revenue and Customs will look into what was disclosed.

I’ve seen this stuff overnight too, and it’s always hard for me to comment on specifically since it just came out, and of course HMRC will look into these to see if there’s anything we can learn.

The Conservative Party overnight left behind an announcement from Sunak’s speech. He will say the government will spend another £500m over the next few years to extend various employment programmes. Here is our preview.

I’m trying to monitor the BTL comments but it’s impossible to read them all. If you have a direct question, include “Andrew” somewhere and I’ll likely find it. I try to answer the questions, and if they are of general interest, I will post the question and answer it above the line (ATL), although I can’t promise that for everyone.

If you want to get my attention quickly, it is better to use Twitter. I’m on AndrewSparrow.
