A Manchester City photo of a Liverpool fan who allegedly spat on the bench during Sunday’s 2-2 draw at Anfield. It will be given to Liverpool to help with their investigation into the incident.
While it is understood that the actual moment was not captured in the still image, the champions had a camera installed in their hideout throughout the match and included the image in their account of the incident in a Liverpool report.
It is believed that there are a number of witnesses who could verify the claim should the suspected fan deny the crime.
City have not lodged a complaint with Merseyside police but it is understood the club are keeping all options open. While spitting at any time is frowned upon, this has occurred at a time when an epidemic meant hygiene was vital and had caused particular concern.
“I didn’t see him, but I heard about him,” said Pep Guardiola. People told me this happened. I am sure Liverpool FC will take action against this person. I know that Liverpool is greater than these actions. In every club, there are people who do a bad job because of their emotions.”
If the fan is guilty of the offence, Liverpool may decide that a ban is the sanction required. In 2018, Doncaster banned anyone from attending matches after an accident occurred during their match at Bristol Rovers. The fan was allegedly spat at the far end.
