Five people have been arrested following an alleged attack – using a traffic cone – on former Conservative Party leader Sir Ian Duncan Smith at the Conservative Party conference in Manchester.
Greater Manchester Police said three men and two women were arrested after reports of an assault on Portland Street around 4pm.
Shortly after 4pm, Sir Ian attended a side event at a conference on Brexit at the Mercure Manchester Piccadilly Hotel.

Sir Ian, who appeared on a panel alongside Brexit Secretary Lord Frost, told the event he had been “assaulted by a group of protesters” during his trip there.
The former minister said, “I am glad to be here. I can honestly say that I was almost not here because I was assaulted by a group of protesters on the way here.”
Sir Ian explained why he initially arrived at the marginal meeting a few minutes before leaving, and added: “That’s why the police were dragging me out the door, I’m scared.”
And he joked, “Anyway, it’s good to be here – I can say it more honestly than the others (on the board)!”
Sir Ian was later heard describing the protesters as “idiots”, “incoherent” and “stupid”.
He was also reported to have been hit in the head with a traffic cone during the accident.
Sir Ian was quoted as telling The Spectator: “They were screaming all the time and then smashed the cone on the back of my head.
“So I turned and grabbed the cone and looked at them and walked toward them and they retreated.”

Greater Manchester Police said officers were at the scene within three minutes after receiving reports of the assault.
“It is not believed that there were any serious injuries, and after a short chase on foot, three men and two women were arrested in connection with the incident, and they are still in custody for questioning,” the force said.
“Investigations are ongoing.”
