“Incoherent idiots” allegedly hit Sir Ian Duncan Smith on the head with a traffic cone on Monday before the former Tory leader disarmed and fended them off.

Sir Ian was on his way to a side event at the Conservative Party conference in Manchester when he was targeted by five people who allegedly yelled at him and his wife Betsy as they walked to the event.

Greater Manchester Police said three men and two women were arrested within three minutes of reports of an attack on Portland Street around 4pm.

said Sir Ian, who was unhurt in an accident.

He later told The Spectator, “For half a second I was about to go up and punch. I went forward and they all backed off – I almost knocked them out, and I lost my rag. I can’t tell you much other than they just followed us, used abusive language, attacked us and used a cone. .

“They were screaming all the time and then smashed the cone on the back of my head, so I turned and grabbed the cone and looked at them and walked towards them and they backed off. I threw the cone on the floor, he said pathetic and turned around and walked out.”

Separately, an activist was expelled from the conference after allegedly assaulting an energy manager.

Clementine Cowten, director of foreign affairs for Octopus Energy Group, said at a marginal event that she was “violently assaulted” by a drunk man in a Midland hotel bar.
