About 200 people gathered on Tuesday evening in a vigil in memory of the teacher Sabina Nysa, who was killed three weeks ago.

The vigil was held in Eastbourne, where the man suspected of killing her was arrested late last month.

Crowds gathered, as the sun set in front of the port city’s Victorian pier, to honor Nysa and protest violence against women.

The 28-year-old teacher was killed while walking to meet a friend in a pub near her home in Kidbrooke, southeast London.

The peaceful demonstration was punctuated by applause as protesters on the waterfront spoke out against victim blaming.

Co-Organizer Natasha Peacock said: “Sabina Nyssa must still be alive. She was loved and we will miss her very much.”

Nice’s walk through Cator Park was only supposed to take five minutes, but it never finished. Her body was found about 24 hours later covered in foliage.

Tuesday’s dark sky was lit up by cellphone lights in honor of the women, with a minute’s silence during the vigil. The event came amid mounting public anger and an ongoing debate over the safety of women and police in the UK.

Many of the attendees carried pictures of Nyssa, while others carried signs calling for male violence, as well as a remembrance of Sarah Everard.

One of the signs read: “When is a woman safe?” While another read: “She was just on her way home.”

“Women are afraid for their lives,” Peacock said. “We have to consider the risks of going out on our own after 6pm and the possibility of being attacked, raped or killed – and advice to stop buses doesn’t make us feel safe.

This is a crisis. We need to make the safety of women and girls a priority.”

The vigil lasted for about an hour, during which various speakers spoke in front of the crowd. At about 7 pm, those assembled paused in deep thought while reading the Muslim prayer.

Coogee Selamage was arrested in the town of East Sussex in the early hours of September 26 and charged with the murder of Nysa.

During a court hearing last week, the 36-year-old’s lawyer indicated he would not plead guilty. Silamaj was placed in pretrial detention prior to a hearing on December 16.

Two other men, aged 38 and 41, who were also arrested by the police in connection with the death of the teacher under investigation, have been released.
