Elite clubs from across Europe had the most striking summer, but there was no deal like the one struck at Old Trafford.
After finishing second in the Premier League last season, the main transfer figures at Manchester United released a three-way statement of intent.
Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane have been signed from Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid, respectively.
However, five-time Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo was completing a thrilling return to Old Trafford that has the rest of the Premier League and Europe standing up and taking notice – especially after neighbors Manchester City have been linked with a controversial onslaught.
Alan Shearer and Micah Richards joined the MOTD host on BBC Sport to discuss the summer story – with Shearer aiming for a brutal dig at City in the process.
Here is a transcript of what Lineker (GL), Shearer (AS), and Richards (MR) said:
MR: It was pretty close, wasn’t it? Allow yourself to dream a little, because City need a striker. I knew something was gurgling. Rio [Ferdinand] He was posting encrypted tweets so he obviously knew. There must have been something. They must have been working on it for a long time. It’s great to be in the Premier League. [Lionel] Messi and Ronaldo, since when did we talk about them? It will only make the league stronger.

AS: They played City like cups! He was never going to Man City. Manchester United cannot allow Cristiano Ronaldo to go to Man City. I know they are on a small fixed gate anyway for the Man United owners, but that would have been the end for them.
They played with them along. His salary must have gone up and up; “Come along to Man City.” I sat there laughing at all the ex-Manchester City players who were so excited. He was never going there.
GL: I don’t know about that. I think it’s the same for a club like Manchester City, which is new money. If there is an opportunity to get someone like Ronaldo, that turns them into a world club. They are making progress, but in terms of the clubs that are known around the world… it’s Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester United, Liverpool. This would turn them into a giant.
AS: I totally understand that they wanted him, but to be allowed, with his success and status as he was and still is at Manchester United, he would never go.

MR: It’s quite a risk, though, isn’t it?
AS: How is it risky? It’s not thinking.
MR: If they don’t win anything. Man City could have secured titles in the next two or three years. If you go to Man United, it’s not guaranteed, is it?
AS: It doesn’t make sense for Man United. They cannot lose in this case. first [Gunnar Solskjaer] He might lose his job if he doesn’t win a trophy, but Man United sold Dan James for £25m worth? They brought Ronaldo… I know his pay is astronomical, but it has to be. He deserves them. For them, putting them in this state is a no-brainer. Press them to win the title.
GL: Does it matter that he’s 36 and he’s 37?
AS: Not the way he plays.
MR: I don’t think so. Do you know why? It gives the rest of the dressing room a lift. When you get the guys who come in and you’re like; ‘Wonderful’. If they are going to win a league title or any other title, it will be in the next two years, although I don’t think they will. Chelsea is very strong with Liverpool [Virgil] Van Dyck is back. I don’t think they will win, but I think they will come close. Longevity to win the league. 38 games. I can not see it. You’re talking about Fred and [Nemanja] Matic in this post. [Scott] McTominay was injured. [Paul] It’s better for Pogba to move on. We are talking about defensive.
GL: But with Ronaldo, wouldn’t they just outperform the teams?
the master: [Raphael] Varane is the quality and the whole back line is great. It’s just the midfield role. I’m not sure.
GL: You don’t want to be sure!
AS: That’s what I laugh at.
GL: Ronaldo is back. It was a nice story, wasn’t it?

AS: It was a great story. When you look back on his career and especially his career at Manchester United. He started there and was raw – but he’s an incredible talent. You can see it from the start. Where he’s at… Ronaldo and Messi have taken their scoring to another level. It’s ridiculous how many goals they scored.
MR: How many goals do you think he’ll score?
GL: It depends if he’s still fit, maybe 25.

AS: I think I’m right in saying, the last time he failed to score 20 or more goals in the league…
GL: He was 12 years old!
AS: That was the season he left Manchester United in 2009. You’re pretty much guaranteed, I say, 20 league goals minimum.
GL: It’s only, at some point, if a lifetime catches up with it.
MR: He looks better than he did when he was here last time.
