Admiral Sir Tony Radakin will become the UK’s next military commander – the first time a Royal Navy commander has been appointed to the top position in two decades.
The First Sea Lord – who was the front-runner for the coveted position – would replace General Sir Nick Carter as Chief of Defense Staff at the end of November.
Boris Johnson described him as an “outstanding” naval officer.
“Admiral Tony will lead the armed forces at a time of amazing change while upholding the values and standards that are respected around the world,” the prime minister said.

“I know he will bring the drive and dedication to work and I look forward to working with him.”
The First Sea Lord said it was “humbly” and “honored” to be chosen after battling for promotion with two generals, air commander and deputy major general in what is known in defense circles as “Game of Thrones.”
Admiral Radakin said: “It would be a great privilege to lead our distinguished people who defend and protect the United Kingdom.
“The government has given us clarity and additional resources to confront the threats we face as a nation. Now is the time to move forward and implement.”
His appointment comes at a time when it faces multiple challenges to the UK’s security, with the rise of China, the potential for more covert attacks from Russia and a potential growing terrorist threat following the US-led withdrawal from Afghanistan.
Defense Secretary Ben Wallace said: “There is a lot to do, at home and abroad, and threats against the UK and our allies are on the rise… I now look forward to working with Admiral Tony as we realize our ambitions. Both share the national armed forces.”
The defense secretary, prime minister and Navy chief paid tribute to General Carter, who will retire from the armed forces after more than four decades of service.
“We owe General Sir Nick Carter our sincerest thanks for his decades of unwavering service keeping the UK, its citizens and our allies safe,” Johnson said.
“During his time at CDS, I have appreciated his wisdom and support during moments of national crisis, including the COVID pandemic.
“I wish him every success in his next endeavours.”

All of the candidates for the outgoing Defense Secretary held a first round of interviews with the Defense Secretary last month.
The Prime Minister then interviewed them, before making his decision and presenting it on Wednesday to the Queen, who finally determined the appointment.
The last time an admiral commanded the armed forces was between 2001 and 2003 under then-Admiral Sir Michael Boyce. He is now known as Admiral of the Fleet Lord Boyce.
