A US nuclear-powered submarine collided with an unidentified object in the South China Sea, slightly injuring 11 sailors, according to officials.

A statement from the US Pacific Fleet said the USS Connecticut was “in a safe and stable condition” following the October 2 incident.

The Sea-Wolf-class attack submarine is nuclear-powered but the fleet said its propulsion system was unaffected and was “operating at full capacity”.

Two Navy officials, speaking anonymously to the Associated Press, said it was not clear why the submarine went down, but it was not another submarine.

Someone said it might have been a sinking ship or a container or something else unknown.

The official statement of the Pacific Fleet did not specify the exact location of the collision, which it said occurred while it sank in “international waters of the Indo-Pacific region.”

“The safety of the crew remains the Navy’s top priority. There are no life-threatening injuries,” the statement said.

“The extent of the damage to the rest of the submarine is being assessed. The US Navy has not requested assistance. The accident will be investigated,” she added.

Navy officials said two sailors sustained moderate injuries and nine minor injuries such as bruises and scrapes.

They said the submarine headed towards Guam port after the accident, and it was not announced sooner in order to maintain operational security.
