Tale from the tape

Here’s a look at how Fury and Wilder measure up ahead of tonight’s main event. The Gypsy King would have the advantages of being two inches in height and reach as well as a heavier 39 pounds, the smallest weight difference in their three fights.

Fury Wilder III

In their first meeting in December 2018, which ended in a draw, Wilder came in at 212 pounds, or 44 pounds less than Fury’s 256 pounds. In a rematch, Wilder hit 231 pounds in his career, and Fury tipped the scales at 273 pounds, claiming he ate six meals and drank eight liters of water a day in search of a size advantage against the lighter American. This tactic paid off as Fury spent most of the night advancing and physically controlling around Wilder, who seemed slower than in their first fight as if he was hacked by the extra weight.

Here’s a look at tonight’s arrangement. We only have one bottom card match left before the main event with Evie Agagba and Frank Sanchez set to enter the arena for a 10-round heavyweight junk at any moment now. Then comes the third chapter of Fury and Wilder, who must make his lanes shortly after the end of the hour.

Here’s a look at the introductions found in the books. They included a slight upset as Mexican Vladimir Hernandez won by a split decision over Philadelphia’s Julian Williams, who not long ago defeated Jarrett Heard for the junior middleweight title but lost the belts in his first defense.

• Robert Helenius DQ6 Adam Konaki, 12 rounds, heavyweight • Jared Anderson TKO 2 Vladimir Tereshkin, eight rounds, heavyweight • Edgar Berlanga UD 10 Marcelo Esteban Coziers, 10 rounds, super middleweight • Vladimir Hernandez SD 10 Julien Williams, 10 rounds, Junior middleweight • Robeisy Ramirez UD 10 Orlando Gonzalez, 10 rounds, featherweight • Bruce Carrington UD 4 Cesar Cantu, four rounds, featherweight • Viktor Faust KO 3 Mike Marshall, eight rounds, heavyweight

Preamble

Hello and welcome to the Las Vegas Strip for tonight’s showdown between Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder for the WBC Heavyweight Championship. We’re in the ring at the T-Mobile Arena for the third fight in 34 months between this very odd couple, who are set to punctuate only the fifth trio of boxing’s prestige division champions after Patterson Johansson, Ali Frazier, Ali Norton and Beau Holyfield.

When they first crossed the tracks in December 2018 for the WBC title then held by Wilder, Fury spent most of the evening boxing with heavy Alabaman ears with erratic tricks and a deft upper-body movement that upset his towering 6-foot-9-inch frame. Even after suffering from knockouts in the ninth and twelfth rounds, the latter of which left him seemingly unconscious on the descent, Fury would come down from the ground every time and finish the round improving on exchanges before settling in a contested tie.

Fifteen months later, Fury delivered the final score that their first encounter failed to deliver with an elaborate level of sustained violence, taking down Wilder in the third and fifth rounds before running down the penalty until the champion’s corner kick in the towel in the seventh.

“You’re a weak guy and you’re getting fired,” Fury said during his last press conference on Wednesday. “Your legacy will be in tatters. Torn to pieces. Finished.”

Said Wilder, who was mostly silent during the run-up to the race: “I’m in a great place, great state of mind. There’s absolutely nothing to prove. This here is redemption, revenge, revenge.”

It’s only after 7pm in Las Vegas and the bottom card is swimming along. The main event is expected to begin in approximately one hour. Lots to come every now and then.
