Battersea fire: Firefighters treat the blaze at the West London Tower

Ten fire engines and 70 firefighters rushed to the scene on Westbridge Road at 8 p.m. Tuesday.

The London Fire Brigade confirmed that an apartment had been destroyed by fire, as a woman managed to escape before crews arrived.

A woman and a child were taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service crews. Another 50 people left the building before the brigade arrived.

Station Commander Pete Johnson said: “The crews encountered thick smoke rising from the top of the apartment building when they arrived.

“There was also a lot of visible flame which led to a large number of calls to our control officers.

Firefighters are working hard to control the fire. There are a number of road closures.”

A witness recounted seeing flames rising from the upper floor as firefighting vehicles arrived and people were evacuated to the parking lot.

“The firefighters got there quickly, thank God,” she said.

“I could hear the siren for a while which was not normal, then finally after hanging the laundry I turned off the light and saw the fire from my kitchen window.”

Officers received 18 calls to the fire as crews from Battersea, Fulham, Wandsworth, North Kensington and surrounding fire stations were fighting the blaze.

An LFB spokesperson said the brigade was called up at 8.02pm and the fire was brought under control by 8.53pm

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
