Bournemouth and Wales midfielder David Brooks has revealed that he has stage 2 Hodgkin lymphoma.
The 24-year-old, who has been with Bournemouth since his 2018 move from Sheffield United, withdrew from Wales’ last squad due to illness and emphasized the importance of this on Tuesday in a statement on his social media channels.
Hodgkin lymphoma is a cancer that develops in the lymph system, which is part of the body’s immune system, and mainly affects young adults in their early twenties or in older adults over the age of 70.
“This is a hard letter for me to write,” Brooks said.
“I have been diagnosed with stage 2 Hodgkin lymphoma and will start a course of treatment next week.
“Although this came as a shock to me and my family, the outlook is positive and I am confident that I will fully recover and be back playing as soon as possible.
“I would like to express my appreciation to the doctors, nurses, consultants and staff who treated me for their professionalism, warmth and understanding during this time.
“I would like to thank everyone at the Wales Football Association because without the quick attention of their medical team we might not have caught the disease.
“I would also like to thank the AFC Bournemouth for all their support and assistance last week.
“While I appreciate that there will be media attention and interest, I would like to ask that my privacy be respected in the coming months and will share my updates on my progress when I am able to do so.
In the meantime, thanks to everyone for their messages of support – it means a lot and will continue to do so in the coming months.
“I look forward to seeing you all again and playing the sport I love very soon.”
