Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants Marcus Rashford to “prioritize” football for Manchester United over off-field commitments after recovering from a long-term shoulder injury.
The 23-year-old could make his season debut at Leicester on Saturday after surgery in August. Solskjaer was not suggesting that Rashford was previously not fully focused on playing but should not allow anything to interfere now that he is fit again.
“I know we will see the best of Marcos in the coming years,” said the manager. “He did great things at a young age but now he is at the best age of a player and he is more experienced. He has [had] It’s time to think. You know what he did off the field as well, because he did some great things, now to prioritize, maybe prioritize football and focus on football because he has a challenge here at Manchester United, he has a challenge on his hands to play for England.
“I think Marcus is one of those who stands up to those challenges and will do so. He will express himself and his talent knowing we want a lot from him but we will give him time to get back to what he was and could be.”
Rashford campaigned against child poverty and caused the government to make two turns regarding free meals for pupils. Solskjær said: “He looks fresh, he looks motivated. He’s a little collected, some muscle. Of course he had to take a lot of responsibility towards us because we both had injuries and at such a young age he gave a lot to the team and did a lot off the field as well.
“The time away for him was the time to focus on himself, I don’t want to go back to being himself, but Marcus Rashford runs with such enthusiasm, without having to take on so much responsibility, it’s a great sight to see. He’s back for a different team. He has serious [Sancho] Here, Mason [Greenwood] Grown up, Cristiano [Ronaldo] Here.”

Solskjaer made Ronaldo a substitute for United’s 1-1 draw with Everton before the international break. The Norwegian coach shrugged off the view of Sir Alex Ferguson, United’s most successful coach, who was filmed saying the Portuguese should have started. “I’m very comfortable with that,” Solskjaer said. “It’s not really fair to the worker [Ferguson] That something like this is being broadcast. You always have opinions and speak to people with confidence. I disagreed with the bastard several times [when a player under him] I told my wife several times but that never made the headlines as a player. I’m sure Sir Alex knows he doesn’t bother me.”
Aaron Wan-Bissaka is available to visit Atalanta on Wednesday in the Champions League after his final match ban for “playing rough” in the defeat to Young Boys was called off following an appeal to UEFA.
