Earlier this week, Sir John Cunliffe said cryptocurrency is a rapidly growing threat to the global economy and needs to be regulated. The Deputy Governor of the Bank of England has called for tough new regulations or else Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies could trigger a financial meltdown similar to the 2008 sub-prime crash. Cunliffe has warned governments to be wary of traders using digital currencies that may be worthless overnight.
Referring to the market capitalization of the cryptocurrency space, he said, “Of course the $2.3 trillion should be viewed in the context of the $250 trillion global financial system.
“But as the financial crisis has shown us, you don’t have to account for a large percentage of the financial sector to raise financial stability issues as sub-prime mortgages were worth about $1.2 trillion in 2008.”
The head of banking added that “there is a relatively limited stabilization risk for Bitcoin at the moment but it could grow very quickly and, as I expect, this area continues to evolve and expand at a rapid pace.
“How large these risks can grow will depend to a large extent on the nature and speed of response by regulatory and supervisory authorities.”
The Deputy Governor of the Bank of England, Mr. Cunliffe, monitors cryptocurrencies for the Bank for International Settlements, the central bank of central banks.
Referring to the grim warning from the Deputy Governor of the Bank of England, bitcoin expert Max Keizer said, “Bitcoin is designed to cause a collapse in the existing monetary banking system.
“This is a mathematically guaranteed result.”
Speaking to Express.co.uk, he added: “Bitcoin has killed central banks.
“The Bank of England is in the second of the five stages of grief, the stage of anger.

“The bargaining stage will be the central bank digital currency stage, and when that fails, depression comes as the price crosses £363,000 ($500,000) and then acceptance by the Bank of England scramble to buy bitcoin before it crosses £727,000 ($1 million) per coin.” “
Hargreaves Lansdown, chief investment and markets analyst, also warned that regulators need to tackle the rise of cryptocurrencies.
Susanna Streeter said regulators have spent years “walking” around cryptocurrencies.
Referring to the Bank of England Governor’s comments about regulating the crypto space, Ms Streeter claimed his warning was the “strongest indication” that they would soon intervene to prevent it “from exploding in the face of the financial sector.”

“Regulators and central banks are walking a difficult tightrope,” she said.
“They recognize the need to promote new decentralized payments technology.
“However, they also ensure that there are sufficient rules in place to prevent unbridled speculation from infecting the broader financial sector.
The price of Bitcoin rose today to close to 63,000 dollars.
