Other than a slightly short header in the first 10 seconds, and some shabby set-piece defense, Chelsea were in control and pretty much relaxed in the first half. As Brentford hit the post during a stampede after a corner kick, it was Chelsea who were threatening more and more – although it took almost until halftime to find the back of the net: Ben Chilwell scored again, so far. Another great left-footed shot.

Chelsea ran out quickly in the second half, and seemed to put the match away in the first ten minutes. We created many decent chances, but we couldn’t find the final ball.

However, the match was largely comfortable until about the last 15-20 minutes, when Brentford suddenly increased the pressure and made things really uncomfortable. Mendy was called into action several times and Brentford’s Mbiomo fired for the second time in the match as well. Al-Shalloba removed the line, then Mendy literally put his face to the test, but we somehow survived the siege.

Tuchel is back at 3-5-2, with some changes from our match against Southampton two weeks ago, some forced, others voluntary returns of Sarr(!), Christensen and Challopah, with the latter making a second straight start. Chilwell, Uzbee as linebacker. Midfield three of the deepest Kova, Kanté and RLC. Lukaku & Werner lead Mount for Kova in the middle of the second half, likewise, then Havertz for Lukaku in the final 15. James to Azpi in the last few minutes. A steady piece defending a huge problem in this one, from corners and long throws. Brentford scored 2 shots in the first 70 minutes. 12 shots in the last 20. Brentford allowed 13 fouls without issuing a yellow for one (Kanos had been given a yellow badge for his complaint before that time). Chelsea scored 8, with 1 yellow for Kovacic. However, Chelsea won a match ruled by Anthony Taylor for the first time in six attempts (!). Top of the league! (Liverpool and Manchester City both won, Manchester United lost).
