On the face of it, the headlines about the rise in Covid case numbers are deeply concerning. But they are missing something important. Covid has, against all expectations, become a disease of young people. There are still tens of thousands of cases a day. But among those over the age of 18, the disease prevalence has barely budged since the summer. Fueling these numbers are cases in schools, where an estimated 8.1 percent of high school-aged children and 3.1 percent of primary school-aged children through October 9 are infected — both far higher than any other demographic.
For me, the data turned out to be an anecdote last week. After escaping the Tory conference with barely even a cold, I got an email from school on Monday:
