Satellite images have emerged showing that China recently upgraded three military bases facing Taiwan. This raised new fears that an invasion of the disputed island was imminent, amid rising tensions between China and Taiwan. There are fears that China will use the upgraded air bases to launch airstrikes after recent threats of such attacks.
Satellite images, captured by Planet Labs and first published by The Drive, show that construction work on the bases began in early 2020 and continued throughout the pandemic.
The latest photos were taken earlier this month.
The three air force bases in Fujian Province – Longtian, Huian, and Zhangzhou – are located along the southeast coast of China.
The bases are located just 100 and 200 miles from Taiwan, amid concerns that the upgrades could be used to support amphibious and airborne assault operations.

Improvements include new storage bunkers and new administrative buildings.
Earlier this month, China launched a record number of sorties – more than 150 – into Taiwan’s airspace.
The updated air force rules come as the editor-in-chief of China’s state newspaper Global Times called for an air strike to “eliminate” US forces stationed in Taiwan, which he described as “invaders”.
He called on the Chinese People’s Liberation Army Air Force to launch a “targeted air strike” against these hostile forces.
Earlier this week, the Global Times also released a PLA military propaganda video.
The exercises showed Chinese forces simulating a Taiwanese invasion, including beaching, dismantling barbed wire and digging trenches.
Last week, the Wall Street Journal quoted US government officials as saying that more than two dozen US special operations soldiers are stationed in Taiwan to provide military training for ground forces.
China claims the autonomous island off its east coast is its territory and says Taiwan should eventually come under its control.
