Solskjaer takes responsibility for choosing Maguire in the event of defeat
Antonio Conte is the leading candidate to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer if he is sacked as Manchester United manager.
The Norwegian’s position at the club was under threat as United withdrew from the top four on Saturday after their 4-2 defeat at Leicester City.
Those are three games without a win in the Premier League, but a report from The Athletic suggests United will stand by their man for now.
That hasn’t stopped the rumor mill from gaining traction and former Chelsea manager Conte is the obvious choice to succeed Solskjaer with the currently unemployed Italian after leaving Inter Milan in the summer.
It is a move that Conte is likely to be open to, given the reasons he rejected Spurs when he was in talks to succeed Jose Mourinho.

Will Antonio Conte be a suitable replacement for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer if he leaves Manchester United? Comment below
The 51-year-old was concerned that Spurs’ long-term goals did not align with his own as he looks to manage a team that has the potential to win trophies.
He doesn’t necessarily need to join a team competing for titles right away, but with scope to become one. Conte wants, at the very least, to join a team of the top four.
United can definitely tick this box as it is widely believed that this current team is good enough to challenge titles this season, given last season’s runner-up.
Three replacements for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer have been ruled out as Man United said ‘don’t panic’ Man United’s stance on sacking Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as pressure mounts after Leicester’s defeat.
Conte was also concerned about the fact that the Spurs squad needed major surgery as they entered a transition phase – something they don’t have to worry about at Old Trafford.
Harry Kane’s unknown future was also a sticking point for the ex-Juventus player as he didn’t want to inherit a team that would likely lose their best player as that would take them in the wrong direction.
Again, this is not a problem for those in charge of the Red Devils.. Paul Pogba’s future may be up in the air, but there are no signs that any of United’s other best players are unhappy with the club.
Conte is in no rush to return directly to management after his San Siro exit and is willing to wait for the right opportunity to present himself.

Conte discussed the reasons for Tottenham’s disdain with Gazzetta dello Sport: “I am looking for projects instead and I am ready to stay at home if something does not convince me.
“It’s about vision, honesty and principles. Overall, I love challenges and have accepted many of them throughout my career.
“Even the top clubs I’ve coached were never the favorites when I arrived.
“However, if something does not convince me, I prefer not to accept it, regardless of money.”

Conte has expressed his desire to try running a club outside Italy again.
He added, “I’d like to have more experiences abroad. I think I’m not someone who is happy with just a relaxed situation, I’ve always chosen the toughest ones instead.”
“As a player, I’ve won everything I could have won, but I’ve also lost a lot.
“When you lose, it leaves inside you the desire to never experience it again, so you do everything to pass that on to your players when you’re a head coach. It all comes from your scars and your desire to avoid getting more.”
