Former US President Bill Clinton has been discharged from hospital in California after contracting the infection.

Mr. Clinton was seen leaving the University of California Irvine Medical Center around midday Sunday, after spending five nights at the facility.

Officials said the former commander-in-chief was admitted on Tuesday due to an infection unrelated to COVID-19.

A Clinton aide said he had been diagnosed with a urinary tract infection that had spread into the bloodstream.

After leaving the hospital, Mr. Clinton, dressed in jeans and a tracksuit, shook hands with the doctors and nurses who had lined up to speak with him.

He then gave a thumbs-up to the journalist who asked him how he was feeling, before getting into a black SUV with his wife, Hillary, to join a motorcade patrolling the highway.

“Mr. Clinton’s fever and white blood cell count are normal, and he will go home to New York to finish taking antibiotics,” Dr. Albish N. Amin said in a statement posted by Clinton’s spokesperson on Twitter.

A Clinton aide told reporters earlier that the former president was treated in the health center’s intensive care unit, but did not receive care in the intensive care unit.

Clinton has experienced many health concerns since leaving the White House in 2001.
