The match was stopped shortly before the end of the first half for more than twenty minutes, as the fan received medical care in the stands before stabilizing and taking him to the hospital.

The incident took place at the East Stand, along the side of the pitch where left-back Reguilon was playing, and it was the Spaniard who alerted referee Andre Marriner to the agonizing scene while Spurs were waiting to take a corner.

The de-aerator was carried across the field from the bunker where the match was first paused and then officially suspended, with both groups returning to the dressing rooms while the fan tackles.

“We heard the screams of the fans,” Reguilon told Sky Sports. “I saw a guy lying down and I went to the referee and said ‘we have to stop, we can’t play like this’.”

“Now, I think he’s fine? This is more important than anything.”

Spurs were leading 2-1 at that point and went on to win 3-2 to spoil Newcastle’s party on the day they welcomed their new Saudi owner to the club.

Kane was among the scorers as he netted in the league for the first time this season, but his first thoughts after the game were with the stricken fan.

“First of all we want to say our best wishes to the man sitting in the stands,” he said.

“It was not a good sight to see. It was devastating to see. It was not good for the fans to see it. But we hear it is stable so we are grateful.”
