A scientist says that the solar system is surrounded by a huge magnetic tunnel

Its model can unite two structures in the sky that were previously thought to be unconnected, a tunnel-like structure

An astronomer has proposed a bold model that suggests that the entire solar system is surrounded by a huge magnetic tunnel.

The model focuses on two major structures in the sky: the North Polar Spur and Fan District, according to a press release from the University of Toronto. While the structures have seemed disconnected since their discovery in the 1960s, a team of researchers at the university led by astronomer Dr. Jennifer West is now suggesting that they are in fact part of the huge, tunnel-like magnetic field surrounding the Solar System.

“If we looked up in the sky, we would see this tunnel-like structure in almost every direction we looked — that is, if we had eyes that could see radio light,” West said in a press release. She and her team published a paper on their findings in the journal Science.

To reach their conclusions, West built her own computer model to simulate what the radio sky would look like from Earth. Using this, the team was able to guess that the two structures were connected by “rope-like” magnetic threads, according to the release.

West estimates that the structures are about 350 light-years away from our solar system and about 1,000 light-years away. “This is the equivalent distance traveled between Toronto and Vancouver two trillion times,” West said in the statement.

future research

The team plans to complete more complex models in the future – in hopes of discovering and understanding the role that magnetic tunnels play in the galaxy.

“Magnetic fields do not exist in isolation. So the next step is to better understand how this local magnetic field relates to both the large-scale galactic magnetic field, as well as to the smaller magnetic fields of our Sun and Earth.”

She added, “I think it’s great to imagine that these structures are everywhere, whenever we look up at the night sky.”
