A woman is injured and her brother and boyfriend killed after a World War I bomb explodes during a honeymoon celebration in Ukraine.

Lydia Macarcho, 31, traveled to the Carpathian Mountains for a belated honeymoon after marrying Norbert Varga, 43, near their home in Bracknell, Berkshire.

Eleven family and friends – including two children – gathered around a forest fire telling stories and drinking tea when the bomb went off.

The explosion is believed to have been caused by fires the group set at the end of a march.

Varga, a radio operator and enthusiastic photographer who has lived in Britain since 2018, had briefly left the fire to retrieve his camera when he heard the bomb explode.

“While I was packing my equipment, an explosion and screeching broke the silence. I ran into the fire as fast as I could, shouting Lydia’s name,” he told the Daily Mail.

Miss McCarshaw was badly wounded, with shrapnel piercing her legs, hands and left eye.

Her brother, Miroslav, 29, and another man died within the hour and a half that it took for medical staff to get to the scene.

Miss McCarshaw, a Ukraine-born accountant who moved to the UK in 2017, described the incident as “as if someone took a stone and threw it in my face”.

“Then I received a whistling in my ear followed by silence as I could only hear myself. I turned and covered my face with my hands and began to pray for myself. Then I realized I was not alone. Everyone was moaning, everyone was in pain.”

She said she hears her brother’s death cries as she lies on the floor, and said her only regret was “not calling him to tell him I loved him.”

The bomb is believed to have been planted during the 1916 Brusilov Offensive, a bloody campaign waged by the Russians against Austria-Hungary.

Miss McCarshaw is still in the hospital but is now walking again. You will need to travel to Hungary for your eye treatment, after which you will return to the UK.

Her family is trying to raise money for her medical bills, as she did not have travel insurance while in Ukraine.

On her GoFundMe page, they wrote: “Lydia suffered severe injuries to her entire body caused by several shrapnel fragments from the explosion.

“Fortunately, she is conscious and is now in a hospital in Ukraine but she desperately needs it and will need: blood transfusions, life-saving surgery, physiotherapy and psychotherapy.

“Accessing healthcare in Ukraine is very expensive and it is a very different system to the NHS in the UK; it is not clear at this point how long Lydia will need for treatment in Ukraine before she is allowed to return to the UK for further treatment.”
