Police say it is an “absolute miracle” that two people stranded while driving through Australia’s Northern Territory have been found alive.
Mahesh Patrick, 14, and Sean Emitja, 21, were driving toward Alice Springs when their car stumbled onto a dirt track last Monday.
Police said they stayed in the car until the next day before walking three miles with a jerrycan in search of water – only to realize they were going in the wrong direction – and had to camp out on a hill.
The couple somehow separated on Wednesday and Mahesh walked miles on his own before he was found in the bush on Friday night.
Police chief Kirsten Engels described the teen’s survival instinct as “exceptional,” according to Australia’s ABC News.
“Mahesh walked about 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) to the fence line and spent the next two days and two nights in the camp and crossed that line for another 7 kilometers,” she said.
“Miraculously, he was found by the community members who reunited him with his community and family.”
“What a wonderful effort, [and at] 14 years old – the instinct to survive is a phenomenon,” said Mrs. Engels
He was treated for dehydration and sore feet as crews of helicopters and walkers continued to search for his friend in the Arlpara and Hearts Range.
Police said they were concerned about the lack of water and described temperatures in the area as “extreme”.

Fortunately, about 24 hours later – around 9.45pm on Saturday, Mr. Emitja was found, too.
Police said he was undergoing medical examinations but appeared to be in good condition.
“They are very fortunate to be still alive – and we all know how dire the situation there is,” said Ms. Engels.
“For what these boys have been through, I can hardly believe they went through it [few] bodily scars.
Police advised people traveling in the Northern Territory to stay with their car if stranded as it is a bigger target to find them and carry four liters of water per day per person.
