Solskjaer takes responsibility for choosing Maguire in the event of defeat

Manchester United would be more than a convenient landing point for Antonio Conte if the club parted with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The Norwegian is under tremendous pressure after United’s 4-2 defeat at Leicester, with the club not winning in three games and outside the top four.

According to The Athletic, the Old Trafford hierarchy will continue to support the less severe coach, but it will still be tough for Solskjaer with a string of tough matches to come.

Conte is the leading candidate to be his replacement if he leaves the Red Devils given his track record of winning titles. He is also unemployed after leaving Inter Milan in the summer, so he will be willing to go to a new job if one becomes available.

It remains to be seen if he will be United’s preferred option, but it appears to be a destination that Conte will be open to, based on his criteria for his next role.

The 51-year-old made clear what he was looking for when he turned down Tottenham in the summer as he was in talks with Daniel Levy to succeed Jose Mourinho.

Conte’s biggest concern was the quality of the Tottenham team and that they were not ready to win trophies or even have the ability to compete for trophies in the years to come.

He wants to join a competitor or at least, a team of the top four, who has the potential to become one.

This is something that will not be a problem with United.

Manchester United finished runners-up to Manchester City in the Premier League last season, proving that they are not far from winning the title.

Conte was also concerned about the fact that Spurs were in need of a major rebuild as they entered a transitional phase – quite the opposite for Manchester United.

It is widely believed that their people are more than capable of winning titles after the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane in the summer.

Harry Kane’s unknown future was also a stumbling block for the former Juventus player as he did not want to inherit a team that could lose their best player which could lead them in the wrong direction.

Again, this is something Conte won’t have to worry about at Old Trafford.

The summer transfer window has proven that the club is looking to strengthen its existing group of players, not the other way around.

They can attract the best players which means individuals are unlikely to be looking to jump ship and there are no indications, along with Paul Pogba, that players are unhappy at United.

Conte discussed the reasons for Tottenham’s disdain with Gazzetta dello Sport: “I am looking for projects instead and I am ready to stay at home if something does not convince me.

“It’s about vision, honesty and principles. Overall, I love challenges and have accepted many of them throughout my career.

“Even the top clubs I’ve coached were never the favorites when I arrived.

“However, if something does not convince me, I prefer not to accept it, regardless of money.”

Conte has expressed his desire to try running a club outside of Italy again, however, showing that he would not be against a return to the Premier League.

He added, “I’d like to have more experiences abroad. I think I’m not someone who is happy with just a relaxed situation, I’ve always chosen the toughest ones instead.”

“As a player, I’ve won everything I could have won, but I’ve also lost a lot.

“When you lose, it leaves inside you the desire to never experience it again, so you do everything to pass that on to your players when you’re a head coach. It all comes from your scars and your desire to avoid getting more.”
