New Mexico authorities say Alec Baldwin fired a rifle at a film made in an accident that killed a film chief and injured a director.

A statement from the Santa Fe Police Office said Baldwin, who stars and produces the movie Rust, fired a shotgun in an accident Thursday.

Representatives were sent to the filming location around 2 p.m. at Bonanza Creek ranch when a 911 caller reported the shooting, the statement said.

The sheriff’s office confirms two people were shot on the set of Rust. Halina Hutchins, 42, director of photography, and Joel Sousa, 48, were shot when Alec Baldwin, 68, producer and actor, fired a firearm.

“Ms. Hutchins was flown, by helicopter, to University of New Mexico Hospital where medical staff were declared dead. Mr. Souza was taken by ambulance to Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center where he is being treated for his injuries.”

“Mr Baldwin came voluntarily to speak with the investigators and after speaking with them he left,” Juan Rios, from the sheriff’s office, told the Guardian.

Production has been discontinued for the film, which was directed by Souza and in which Baldwin produced and starred.

A Baldwin spokesperson said there was an incident on the set that involved a misfiring of a calibrated pistol.

The Santa Fe New Mexico newspaper reported that Baldwin was seen on Thursday crying outside the mayor’s office, but attempts to get him to comment were unsuccessful.

“According to investigators, the scene filmed appears to have involved the use of a firearm when it was fired,” Rios told the Albuquerque Journal. “Investigators are investigating how and what type of projectile was fired.”

Hutchins, 42, was the director of photography for the 2020 action movie Archenemy, starring Joe Manganiello. A 2015 graduate of the American Film Institute, she was named a “Rising Star” by the American Cinematographer in 2019.

“I am so saddened by the loss of Helena. “We were so pissed off that this might happen on set,” Archenemy Director Adam Egypt Mortimer said on Twitter. “She was an amazing talent who was totally committed to art and photography.”

“Details are unclear at this time, but we are working to find out more, and we support a full investigation into this tragic event,” International Cinematographers Guild President and CEO John Lindley said in a statement cited by The Associated Press. .

Expressions of appreciation for Hutchins poured into social media.

Filming for Rust was scheduled to continue in early November, according to a press release from the New Mexico Bureau of Films.

The film is about a 13-year-old boy who is left to fend for himself and his younger brother after their parents’ deaths in Kansas in the 1880s, according to the Internet Movie Database. A teenager escapes with his long-estranged grandfather (played by Baldwin) after a boy is sentenced to death for the accidental murder of a local rancher.

In 1993, Brandon Lee, 28, the son of late martial arts star Bruce Lee, died after being hit with a .44-caliber chainring while filming the death scene for The Crow. The gun was supposed to fire an empty bullet, but the autopsy showed a bullet lodged near his spine.
