Students and staff at the Carson City School District will perform rock ‘n’ roll earthquake drills throughout the day, Thursday, October 21. The events are part of the Great Nevada ShakeOut, an annual statewide earthquake training designed to teach students and teachers about how to protect themselves during an earthquake.

“Communities often warn of natural disasters, such as hurricanes, fires, floods, and the like), however, earthquakes can strike suddenly and without warning,” said Ann Sear, director of risk for Carson City Schools District. Action to be taken to protect themselves from injury.”

Although most Nevada schools and agencies have the option to participate in the annual event whenever they like, a rehearsal will take place at Bordwich Bray Elementary School in Carson City at 1:30 p.m. Thursday to accommodate holiday schedules.

Drop, Cover, and Hold On is the technology that Great Nevada ShakeOut promotes as the safest way to protect yourself during an earthquake. About 19 million people worldwide are expected to participate in similar training and activities in their communities.

In the event of an earthquake, people are encouraged to get on their knees wherever they are, and then use one arm to protect the head and neck while using the other hand to hold a sturdy table or desk underneath. If the person cannot find something strong to hold on to, they should try to approach an inner wall and use both arms to protect your head and neck.

Nevada is the third most seismically active state in the country. Experts say a major earthquake is likely to hit northern or southern Nevada in the near future.
