Filming by Alec Baldwin: Aerial footage of a movie set after a prop pistol fails, killing the cinematographer
Authorities said Alec Baldwin was “heartbroken” after he fired a gun that killed cinematographer Helena Hutchins and wounded director Joel Sousa on the set of his new movie.
The film, Rust, was filmed at Bonanza Creek ranch outside of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and filming was temporarily suspended.
Santa Fe County deputies were called to the scene at 1:50 p.m. Thursday.
Ms. Hutchins was flown to University of New Mexico Hospital by helicopter, where she was pronounced dead.
Mr. Souza was taken to Christos St. Vincent Regional Medical Center where he underwent treatment for his injuries. He was released on Friday morning.
The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement that the couple were killed when 68-year-old Baldwin, a producer and actor in the accidental murder movie, fired a gun.
Santa Fe’s chief prosecutor, Marie Carmack Altois, said she has opened an investigation into possible criminal charges stemming from the fatal shooting.
“At this time, we don’t know if charges will be brought,” she said.
Mr Baldwin released a statement on Friday saying he was “broken at heart”.
“I am fully cooperating with the police investigation to address how this tragedy occurred and I am in contact with her husband, and to provide support to him and his family,” he wrote in a post on his Twitter and Instagram account.
“My heart is broken for her husband, her son, and everyone who knew and loved Halina.”

Santa Fe County Sheriff Juan Rios revealed: “The mayor’s office confirms that two people were shot on the set of the movie Rust.”

The International Cinematographers Guild mourns the death of Helena Hutchins
Halina Hutchins’ death was confirmed by the International Cinematographers Guild, Local 600.
“We received the devastating news this evening, that one of our members, Halina Hutchins, director of photography for a production called Rust in New Mexico, has died of injuries sustained on set,” said John Lindley, president of the syndicate. Rebecca Ryan, CEO, told Variety.
“Details are unclear at the moment, but we are working to find out more, and we support a full investigation into this tragic event. This is a huge loss, and our grief over the death of a member of our guild’s family.”

Helena Hutchins was a 42-year-old cinematographer from Los Angeles.
She grew up on a Soviet military base in the Arctic Circle and previously worked as a journalist with a British documentary production in Europe. After moving to Los Angeles, she graduated from the AFI Conservatory with a master’s degree in Cinematography.
Hutchins was airlifted to a hospital in Albuquerque on Thursday (October 21), where she died of her injuries.
On the other hand, Joel Souza is in intensive care. He is a filmmaker based in the San Francisco Bay Area, where he lives with his wife and two children.
Souza is the director and screenwriter of the movie Rust.

He is seen wearing dirty cowboy boots, a jacket, and a bandana with a hat.
