The court heard that a drunken thug killed a father of two who was celebrating his birthday with one punch.
Samuel Thorpe, 26, was convicted of the murder of 45-year-old Cheshire businessman Adam Lovatt today (October 22) at the Liverpool Crown after a 10-day trial.
He will be sentenced on November 26.
A trial originally took place in January 2020, but no verdict was reached, and Thorpe was convicted today after a retrial that began on October 11, CheshireLive reported.

The accident that led to Adam Lovatt’s death occurred in the early hours of Friday morning, May 25, 2018, outside the Bridge Inn, on Shropshire Street in Crewe.
Mr. Lovatt was spending the evening celebrating his birthday with his wife at Lord Combermere in the village of Audlem.
He decided to continue his evening on the Shroppie Fly, in Audlem Wharf, when his wife returned home.
While in the pub, another man in the pub, who objected to his being there, attempted to assault Mr. Lovatt but others in the pub intervened.

Almost immediately Mr. Lovat left the tavern and began to walk back toward Shropshire Street.
After he left the tavern, Thorpe and his co-defendant Nicholas Hill left the pub and set out to catch Mr. Lovatt.
Thorpe met him next to the Bridge Inn as Hill made his way around the back of the building in an attempt to isolate him.
Thorpe encountered Mr. Lovat outside the Bridge Inn, punching him once in the face. He fell backwards, hit his head on the ground and sustained a skull fracture and major brain hemorrhage. He died later that day.
After the assault, Hill approached Thorpe who was trying to wake Mr. Lovatt, who was unconscious and blood oozing from his head. Then Thorpe asked Hill to return to the tavern, which he did.
When a passing motorist stopped to check on Mr. Lovat, Thorpe fled and returned to the Shroppie Fly. The driver called an ambulance and a number of people who were drinking in the bar got out and tried to help the victim.
Meanwhile, to avoid the police’s attention, Thorpe and Hill drove away from the scene through quiet country lanes to Market Drayton where they bought beer before heading back to Hill’s house.
There they agreed on a cover story and both tried to distance themselves from what had happened.
The next day, knowing that the police might be looking for him, Thorpe threw his phone away and left the area to stay overnight at a guest house in North Wales, only returning when the police attended his parents’ address to arrest him.
Detectives from the Cheshire Police Principal Investigative Team launched an investigation following the death and the two were arrested two days later.

In heartfelt tribute to her “amazing husband” who “made life better in every way,” Adam’s wife, Claire Lovatt, spoke of the shock his “meaningless, tragic death” had caused her in the three and a half years. The trial was in court.
Claire Lovatt said: “The tremendous loss I have gone through from the staggering loss of my husband Adam cannot be understated. His tragic, senseless death has caused so many traumas over the past three and a half years.
“As a nurse, I just wanted to help people, as a mother, I just wanted a good life for our children and for them to grow up in a respectful and caring environment. Adam’s love and support gave us all of this.
“Literally having Adam out of our lives and stealing my future is something no one can bear. I am no longer the person I was when he was alive. Adam loved me and married me because of my values of caring for others because we were both ‘good’ people.”
“Adam was a true family man, being a good husband and father were very important values to him as well as working hard and earning a living honestly. We enjoyed simple things like family meals – which Adam always cooked.
“He did lovely things for me like running a hot bath, blowing out the candles and having a meal cooked for me when I arrived late from the nursing shift. He made life better in every way.”

Detective Inspector Adam Waller, who led the death investigation, said: “Adam’s life was tragically cut short with just one strike. It is a stark reminder to people that the decision to launch an attack on someone in anger can instantly change lives.”
“Adam’s family is grieving and trying to adjust to life without a loved one, and the other families will have to come to terms with loved ones who have been convicted and face the prospect of spending time behind bars – all for one punch in the night out.
Adam was left lying mortally wounded on the road until a passing motorist called for professional medical assistance.
Neither Thorpe nor Hill made any attempts to take care of anyone other than themselves in trying to escape and trying to hide their tracks. The attempts to discredit Adam throughout the trial were heartbreaking for Adam’s family who had to testify to this, and fortunately had no effect on The result “.
Nicholas Hill, 37, of Moorsfield Avenue, Audlem, was found not guilty of involuntary manslaughter but has already pleaded guilty to assisting a guilty party at a previous hearing. He will also be sentenced on November 26.
