“This region is not an area subject to active tectonic deformation, as in southwest BC, but the Rocky Mountains, although ancient, are relatively young, and the process of their construction has created all kinds of faults. As a result, these small earthquakes do not occur frequently.”

In the past 20 years, there have been about 10 earthquakes in the region above 4.0, but below 5.0. Schaeffer says those who measure in the range 2-3 number in the hundreds.

Earthquakes Canada, originally installed 37 km northwest of Rocky Mountain House, now lists growler 31 km northwest of the municipality.

So far, there have been no reports of damage, although the quake was reported to be felt from as far away as Hinton, Fegreville and Clarisholm.

If you feel like it, Earthquakes Canada invites you to fill out their survey.
