Former midfielder Paul Scholes has been accused of “cheating” Mason Greenwood after he failed to lock up the ball in preparation for Liverpool’s first goal in their 5-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford.
On a forgettable afternoon for all United callers, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side were stunned by their historic opponents, finding themselves 4-0 down by half time.
Midfielders Naby Keita and Diogo Jota scored two goals for Jurgen Klopp before Mohamed Salah’s double scored the guests to take a four-goal lead in the first half, as United’s players booed in the first half as they returned towards the dressing room.
Salah made it 5-0 after the break, before Paul Pogba’s red card increased matters for United. From start to finish, United’s defensive weaknesses were there for all to see, as Liverpool opened them up time and time again.

However, former United midfielder Scholes – who correctly predicted United would find themselves “four games back” if he repeated his first-half display against Atalanta last week – picked youngster Greenwood for his criticism, insisting on his failure to get close to Virgil. Van Dijk and then Andy Robertson led to Keita giving Old Trafford the freedom to put the guests first.
“Tactically it was bad today, very bad,” Scholes said. “But on the flip side of that, players have to have some kind of common sense as well.
“Thinking of Mason [Greenwood] In that first case, it was almost cheating.
“He knew he wasn’t going to get the ball and he knew it looked like he was going to shut it down, but he knew he was just going to pass it and he couldn’t do anything.
“It’s almost a cheat’s way of running to him, they pass it and then he goes a little backward because he thinks, ‘I did my homework.
“But he did not do his duty, he destroyed the whole team, the whole team was pulled from their positions, [Aaron] Wan-Bissaka should come out, [Victor] Lindelof ends up at right-back, then there’s all the space in the middle.
“Suddenly, from Mason not doing his job properly, the team is attacking, Salah played Keita, he could have played [Trent] Alexander-Arnold, he could have played Robertson. The way it happened was ridiculous, and sometimes players have to use common sense. ”
In addition to criticizing Greenwood, Scholes also alluded to some blame on United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for choosing to pair Scott McTominay with Fred at the midfield base.
“It will be very difficult [for Solskjaer] To get back from him, you really don’t know,” added Scholes.
“You have to question the tactics, today of all days we keep coming back to it, these two playing in midfield on their own. It was almost two against five at times. It’s impossible for any midfielder.
“We can sit here and say that Fred and McTominay are not good enough for Manchester United in midfield to win the league, but when you are exposed it is impossible for anyone. It was always going to happen, and playing a game like that against a top-tier team, that was It will always happen.”
