The police officer who killed Sarah Everard has filed an appeal to reduce his prison sentence.
Wayne Cousins was handed a tariff for life in September after the 33-year-old was kidnapped, raped and murdered.
A Metropolitan Police firearms officer used the note card and handcuffs to kidnap a marketing director off the street, using Covid lockdown rules to make a fake arrest.
The 48-year-old had been planning at least a month before Everard was kidnapped while returning home from a friend’s house in Clapham, south London, on the evening of March 3.
“A request (to allow the judgment to be appealed) has been submitted,” an appeals court official said on Wednesday.
Lord Justice Fulford, who delivered the sentencing at the Old Bailey, said the case in which a service officer abused his position was so extraordinary that it warranted a life order, which meant that the Cosines would never be released.
This was the first time the sentence had been imposed for a single murder of an adult who was not committed during a terrorist attack.
The judge said: “The misuse of the role of a police officer as happened in this case in order to kidnap, rape and kill a single victim is equivalent to the seriousness of murder for the purpose of promoting a political, religious or ideological cause.”
After the sentence was pronounced, the stricken Everard family said that although there was nothing that could bring her back, knowing the Cousins ”will be imprisoned forever brings them some relief.”
Earlier this month, Reading terrorist Khairy Saadallah lost to an appeals court against his life sentence for the murder of three men, after a hearing in the Royal Courts of Justice.
