Ten people were arrested after Insulate Britain protesters blocked the M25 again – walking onto the motorway between oncoming traffic lanes.

On Friday morning, 14 people walked on the main road between Junction 28 and 29 of the Essex motorway.

Hours later, two more groups of protesters joined the group, marching along white lines on the highway at Junction 21 and 22.

This is the 17th time in six weeks that the group has caused road disruptions.

The group said the decision to stop sitting in the middle of the roads to shut down vehicles came after “reactions” that many drivers were frustrated with their actions.

Essex Police confirmed that 10 people had been arrested on Friday morning.

The force said in a statement: “We were called around eight o’clock this morning as there were reports of seeing a number of people walking in traffic to close both roads between the 28th and 29th junction.”

Chief Inspector Lee Deval added: “Accidents of this nature will not only be frustrating for road users trying to reach their destination, but it is also very dangerous to walk in fast-moving traffic.

“I would like to thank today’s road users for their patience and understanding.

“She helped us clear the area quickly, to keep people safe, reduce disruption, and keep Essex moving.

“Our teams are experienced in dealing with incidents that cause major disruption and are well prepared for them.”

We will continue to deal with these incidents firmly.”

Officers responded quickly to get people off the road and both roads reopened within thirty minutes

A spokesperson for the group, who gave his name as Bev, said safety was “of paramount importance” and that the protests would not have continued if the cars had not slowed down sufficiently.

“The intention is to enter the road and walk towards oncoming traffic along the white lines,” he said.

“If the cars weren’t slowing down and moving at full speed, we would be on the hard shoulder and wearing the signs.

“Hopefully it slows down anyway.

He added: “We have received feedback that people are frustrated because they have spent time in queues.

“This is like a tiered traffic queue, so we’ll move on, and once they get to the front they’ll be able to move on.

“We don’t plan to stop traffic but it could slow to five miles per hour.

On Wednesday, Insulate Britain told motorists to avoid the M25 or reduce their speed to 20 mph to reduce the risk of accidents.

It comes after a nationwide injunction was issued against the protesters, covering “the entire strategic road network”.

An offshoot of Extinction Rebellion, the group wants the government to isolate all UK homes by 2030 to cut carbon emissions.
